With some categories of persons, due to their individual disposition, the danger of contracting a fungal infection is higher than it is with other people. Particular physical states of being, diseases or drugs influencing our metabolism or immune system negatively, facilitate an infection.

People who suffer from AIDS or cancer, or who have undergone transplantation of a new organ are at a special risk due to their reduced immune status. Diabetics, too, have to deal with this more frequently, as the raised level of sugar in blood and tissue offers an ideal culture medium to fungi. During pregnancy, women are especially receptive to vaginal fungal infections. Hormonal changes in the vagina's metabolism are the main cause.

In the case of the elderly and infants, the immune system may be weakened or the natural micro flora be disturbed or not yet be properly built up, giving fungi an easy time. Certain professionals, such as life-guards, veterinarians or bakers are at special risk due to their frequent contact to fungi. Excess weight, circulatory disorders, stress and states of malnutrition are all to be counted among further general risk factors.
